Scents of a saint

Bismillah.

We had the privilege to be in the gathering with Shaykh Abdul Aziz (Baba Aziz), two days after the demise of the venerated Habib Ali bin Jaafar al-Idrus who had passed away on Thursday, 13 May 2010.

We knew from the several sittings (majlis ta'lim) with Baba Aziz how attached he was to Almarhum Habib Ali. Fresh from the sad turn of event, Baba said:

"I wish to hand out this perfume to all of you. It is one habit I learned from Almarhum Habib Ali. It is qiswah. The fragrant which is used on the Kaabah has a sentimental value to me because of my family tradition right from my great grandfather and grandfather when we were living in Makkah. Habib Ali had told me to always distribute perfume to the mureed during class. He said the scent may linger on for a while but what's more important is that the scent from the knowledge will last for a long... long... time."

Baba Aziz confessed how badly affected he was; how much Almarhum had groomed him...and then he broke into tears!

For a while, the audience fell into an awkward silence as we witnessed the love and attachment Baba Aziz had towards Almarhum Habib Ali - a perfumed soul who had left an everlasting scent on all who adored him especially one like Baba Aziz.

Al-Fatihah to Almarhum Habib Ali and all the beloved of Allah who have left us physically, but not in spirit.

Almarhum Habib Ali's maqam is located at
Tanah Perkuburan Bukit Cermai, Batu Pahat, Malaysia
(At Taman Kemajuan/ near Simpang Rantai roundabout)
